🕯️ What is Samhain? (pronounced “sow-in”)
Long before Halloween became the celebration we know today, Ireland marked the arrival of winter with Samhain, one of the most important festivals in the ancient Celtic calendar.
Traditionally celebrated around 31 October and 1 November, Samhain marked the transition from the lighter half of the year into winter. It was a time of seasonal change, gathering and reflection, when communities prepared for the darker months ahead.
But Samhain was also associated with the supernatural.
According to traditional beliefs, Samhain was a time when the boundary between the world of the living and the Otherworld was thought to become especially thin. Spirits and other supernatural beings were believed to be able to cross into our world, making it a time of mystery, storytelling and ritual.
🔥 Fires were traditionally lit, communities gathered together, and people told stories and took part in customs associated with protection and the supernatural.
Over time, Samhain traditions became intertwined with the later celebration of Halloween, helping shape many of the customs we recognise today.
